Nonfunctional Retroperitoneal Paraganglioma with Cystic Change

Abstract
Paragangliomas are tumors arising from the neuroendocrine elements (Chief cells) of the paraganglia. Paragangliomas are collection of specialized neural crest cells distributed symmetrically along the aorta in close association with the
sympathetic
chain. Paragangliomas are uncommon tumors and are infrequently found in the extraadrenal retroperitoneum. The behavior of extraadrenal retreperitoneal paragangliomas is known to be more malignant than those which are found in other sites of the
body.
The treatment of choice is surgical resection. Paragangliomas are generally radioresistent as well as unresponsive to conventional chemotherapy. The microscopic features of malignancy have not been delineated and the correlation between
histologic
appearance and clinical behavior is poor.
We investigated and treated a patient with nonfunctioning retroperitoneal paraganglioma, which was found incidentally at ultrasonography. It was confirmed by pathological study. Herein we report on a case of nonfunctioning retroperitoneal
paraganglioma
with a review of the literature.
